These tips can help improve quality of life for someone living with a chronic health condition.

Have you ever gotten out of bed and thought, “It’s probably going to be one of those days!” Maybe your alarm didn’t go off, the hot water heater decided to quit working, and the dog chewed up one of your favorite shoes overnight. Then picture if each and every day were “one of those days!” For someone coping with a chronic health condition (and that is much of the senior population), constant struggles and challenges may be a given.

However, there are steps an older adult can take to discover and maintain a life of joy, even in the face of chronic illness. For instance:

  • Pursue passions. Seeking purpose and meaning in every day is crucial – and possible. Many seniors find gratification in assisting and encouraging other people. Others thrive on being lifelong learners. For some it may mean documenting earlier times for the following generation. Brainstorm ideas until you come upon one that ignites passion, and then make it a real possibility.
  • Practice positivity. One good way to quickly attain a more positive take on life is by journaling. Encourage senior loved ones to start each day by creating a list of everything they’re thankful for that morning, including the relatively mundane: the smell of fresh coffee brewing, a pet curled up in a sunbeam, a planned lunch date with a friend. At the conclusion of every week, sit together and read back through the prior entries for a quick and effective pick-me-up.
  • Reject negativity. Adding in a measure of positivity as mentioned above can naturally result in diminished negativity, but there are additional measures that may be taken as well. For example, permit breaks from tasks that induce frustration, providing needed time to de-stress. Put the emphasis on dealing with tasks that can be completed successfully, and find an alternative solution for those that are too challenging, such as delegating those tasks to another family member or friend, or employing the services of an expert.
  • Leave the house. Sustaining as active a lifestyle as possible outside the home is usually so energizing for seniors. Help older loved ones go out for hair appointments, shopping trips, visits with close friends, and other fun outings, as much as they are comfortable. Even simply going outside and relaxing on the front porch when weather permits can significantly enhance someone’s spirits and outlook.
